more old town

Warsaw is famous for being reconstructed by the Soviets in the 50s. This monument to the Warsaw uprising, finished in 1989, is classic Soviet.


But I never considered that the project to reconstruct Old Town also entailed building dozens of churches at the height of Stalinism! This church, which features a huge Virgin Mary on the roof (and a Polish flag above her!), is right across the street from the war monument. In fact, you can see part of the monument in the lower right of the picture. It's not everyday you see socialist realism juxtaposed with high Polish nationalist architecture.
