No, it's not a repeat of 1812. It's fireworks--I ended my Victory Day celebration at a friend's apartment with a great view of Moscow. You can see Moscow University, one of the famous "Seven Sisters" Stalinist skyscrapers, to the left of the fireworks. My friend is renting her place, by the way, from an old Tatar lady. I should have gotten a picture of it--carpets everywhere, the original Soviet textiles and wallpaper, and even a picture of a topless model with feathered bangs, c. 1982, in the bathroom. Classic.
I've been so busy socializing with all the other historians here that I haven't walked around much. I tried today, but Red Square was still blocked off.
The city center is still festive from victory day: General Zhukov is still dolled up...
As is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
